STANFORD, Calif. – South Bay rivals Stanford and Santa Clara, who last played a memorable overtime game in September and were among the final 16 left in the NCAA tournament, will meet in the spring season.
The match, to be played at Santa Clara on April 22, resumes a series that not only is played annually in the fall, but in the spring as well. It is among five games on a spring schedule the Cardinal has announced.
Stanford opens April 5 with visiting USF and follows by playing host to Nevada on April 19. After Santa Clara, Stanford travels to Cal on April 26 and plays host to the Bay Area Breeze of the semipro W-League.
Through the years, Santa Clara is Stanford’s most frequent opponent. Stanford trails in the all-time fall series, 18-16-5, but the Cardinal has won their past nine meetings, including a 3-2 thriller at Santa Clara’s Buck Shaw Stadium on Sept. 22. However, Santa Clara has had success against Stanford in the spring.
Stanford will play its spring season with its 2013 roster, but without the seven players who have exhausted their eligibility and their juniors who are spending a quarter abroad. However, Stanford should have freshmen midfielder Stephanie Amack, centerback Maddie Bauer, and goalkeeper Jane Campbell, and sophomore defender Laura Liedle. The four combined to help the U.S. Under-20 national team to the CONCACAF title on Sunday.
Stanford finished 15-6-1 last fall, advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the eighth consecutive season and hit the 15-victory plateau for the eighth consecutive season as well.
The Cardinal extended its ongoing NCAA tournament home winning streak to 21, and reached fantastic heights with a 73-match home unbeaten streak and 44-match conference winning streak. The latter two ended with a 1-0 loss to Arizona State on Oct. 6, but the home unbeaten streak had continued into its sixth season and was the second-longest in NCAA Division I history. The conference winning streak was the third-longest ever.
Taylor Uhl, a junior forward, scored 12 goals to lead the Pac-12 Conference and is among nine starters returning.
The following is Stanford’s spring schedule. Days, times, locations, and even opponents are subject to change.
