PHILADELPHIA – Stanford forward Courtney Verloo was selected in the first round of the National Women’s Soccer League draft Friday by the Western New York Flash and was the ninth overall pick.

Verloo, the team’s points leader the past two seasons, became the eighth Stanford player taken in the first round of a domestic pro draft (including the WUSA, WPS, and the NWSL) and the 22nd Cardinal overall.

Western New York plays in Rochester and is among nine teams in the second-year league. The Flash (10-4-8, 38 points) had the league’s best regular-season record and reached the inaugural NWSL final before falling to Portland Thorns FC, 2-0.

Verloo will join a squad that includes U.S. national team star Abby Wambach and national team veteran Carli Lloyd. The Flash franchise dates back to Women’s Professional Soccer, the league founded by former Stanford player Tonya Antonucci and which played from 2009-2011.

Verloo spent five seasons at Stanford, including a redshirt year, and was integral to the program’s success. During that span, Stanford went 109-10-6, reached the NCAA College Cup four times, won four Pac-12 titles and was the 2011 NCAA champion.

The Tualatin, Ore., native was a third-team All-America as a central defender in 2010, and in 2013 was named to the NSCAA All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-12 first teams. Verloo scored 23 goals and had 25 assists in her career, including nine goals and six assists last season.

Deadly on set pieces, Verloo scored six goals in 2013 on dead-ball kicks. Her crowning achievement was a hat trick in a 3-2 double overtime victory over Santa Clara on Sept. 22. Her free kick gave Stanford a first-half lead, she tied the match on a penalty in the 90th minute, and won it on another free kick, this time in the 108th.

A human biology major with a cumulative GPA of 3.37, Verloo was named to the 2013 NSCAA Scholar All-America second team and three times was an all-conference All-Academic selection.

Verloo joins a league that included 10 former Stanford players in its first season: Marisa Abegg ‘09, Nicole Barnhart ‘04, Rachel Buehler ‘07, Mariah Nogueira ‘13, Teresa Noyola ‘12, Kelley O’Hara ‘10, Rachel Quon ‘13, Emilee Shim O'Neil '05, Lindsay Taylor ‘12, and Madeleine Thompson ‘13. Also, U.S. national teamer Christen Press ’11, who has played the past two seasons in Sweden, has expressed an interest in joining the NWSL.
