The Stanford football team has signed 20 student-athletes, Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw announced Wednesday afternoon on National Signing Day. Each member of the 2014 recruiting class officially submitted their National Letter of Intent and Financial Aid Agreement to Stanford University.

"As usual, the 2014 Stanford class starts up front," said Shaw. "We added four big, physical and athletic offensive linemen, the best all-around tight end in the nation, two penetrating defensive lineman and one of the most athletic and versatile linebacker classes in the country. This year's class of defensive backs is also comparable to the most athletic groups in the nation. Our skill positions on offense have both toughness and game-changing speed and it also helps to add the No. 1 quarterback in the class."

Scout and ESPN both had the group ranked top-20 in the nation before five-star defensive end Solomon Thomas and top-40 cornerback Terrence Alexander made their commitments official on ESPNU during signing day. The pair propelled Stanford to a consensus top-20 class among the five major services (ninth by PrepStar, 13th by 247Sports, 15th by ESPN, 15th by Rivals and 16th by Scout).

Nine of Stanford’s signees are PrepStar All-Americans, including four Dream Team members and four consensus top-100 recruits in Keller Chryst, Christian McCaffrey, Thomas and Casey Tucker.

Defensive line coach Randy Hart said of Thomas, "He's a complete player, a guy that likes to be a technician. He has a great motor and has the ability to be a great football player."

Alexander is an incoming player who the coaching staff and newly appointed Willie Shaw Director of Defense Lance Anderson believe to be one of the most talented cover corners they have seen at camp. Anderson said, "We were amazed at how much of a natural cover corner he is, but at the same time he is a tough, physical kid."

Thomas and Alexander are included among 10 defensive players to choose Stanford. Five can play linebacker and four are defensive backs. The other two are defensive ends.

The linebackers include four-star recruits Joey Alfieri, Bobby Okereke and Jordan Perez, as well as Lane Veach, a top-100 outside linebacker according to ESPN.

Joining one of the country’s top-25 signees in Thomas at defensive end is Harrison Phillips, Nebraska’s top recruit according to 247Sports.

Defensive backs include four-star corner Alijah Holder, four-star safety Brandon Simmons, Alameen Murphy, the No. 48-ranked corner by Scout, and Denzel Franklin, the nation’s No. 63 safety according to ESPN.

On the offensive side of the ball, the class is highlighted by four linemen.

Jesse Burkett, Reilly Gibbons and Tucker are all rated as high as four stars or higher and A.T. Hall is a three-star recruit. The four average over 6-5 and nearly 300 pounds.

The Cardinal will look to continue its run of strong tight end play with the addition of Dalton Schultz, one of the most highly-coveted recruits in the nation.

“Dalton is a kid that all the recruiting services had as the No. 1 tight end in America,” Andrew Luck Director of Offense Mike Bloomgren said. “When we evaluate kids and put them on our board, we are going to agree with them and sometimes we are not. In Dalton’s case, we absolutely did.”

The one quarterback on the list is making the shortest trip to campus. Chryst, from Palo Alto High School, is a player who Bloomgren calls, “an unbelievable student of the game.” Chryst was an Elite 11 finalist in 2013 and is the son of San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach George (Geep) Chryst.

Chryst is joined in the backfield by running back McCaffrey and fullback Daniel Marx.

McCaffrey is a familiar name on The Farm as his father, Ed, starred at wide receiver for the Cardinal and went on to play professionally for the New York Giants (1991-94), San Francisco 49ers (1994) and Denver Broncos (1994-2003). The newest McCaffrey was the Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

Marx comes in as one of the highest ranked fullbacks in the country after playing fullback, tight end and linebacker in high school. ESPN has him as the nation's third-best at fullback, while Scout ranks him fourth and 247Sports puts him sixth.

Washington-product Isaiah Brandt-Sims is the lone wide receiver in the class, as Stanford returns its top five pass-catchers in terms of yards from the 2013 squad. Brandt-Sims is a four-star recruit and the nation's 31st-best athlete according to 247Sports.

The 20 newest Cardinal hail from 12 states: Arizona (3), California (5), Colorado, Florida (2), Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas (2), Utah and Washington.
