STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford senior strong safety Jordan Richards has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List as one of 39 preseason candidates for the award.
The Jim Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is named after one of history’s great all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
One of the nation’s premier student-athletes, Richards earned Capitol One Academic All-America honors last year and is a preseason All-American by Athlon. Additionally, the Folsom, Calif. native is one of two Stanford players on the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list, honoring overall performance and character.
He has previously been named to watch lists for the Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year) and Nagurski Award (outstanding defensive player).
Richards is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic and honorable mention pick. Last year he logged 69 tackles with four coming for a loss, three interceptions and three pass breakups. Like Carter, he was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List earlier in the week.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list, honoring the country’s top defensive back, is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 11, 2014 on ESPN.
The Jim Thorpe Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Stanford’s season opens Aug. 30 with a 1 p.m. (PT) home game against UC Davis on Pac-12 Networks. The Cardinal plays its first three games at home with USC visiting the Stadium Sept. 6 (12:30 p.m., ABC) and Army visiting Sept. 13 (2 p.m., Pac-12 Net).
