Every Thursday, GoStanford.com will present an interview with a Stanford women’s gymnastics alumna. This week, sophomore Maggie Teets features Katy Herbert Kotlarczyk (‘02) who competed in the all-around and graduated with a degree in American Studies, minor in psychology and co-term in sociology.

Maggie: Can you describe what you have been doing since graduating from Stanford?

Katy: Upon graduating from Stanford, I moved to Madrid, Spain, for six months to brush up on my Spanish. Then after a series of gaps, I moved to Washington D.C. where I met my future husband. While in D.C. I worked for a nonprofit consulting firm and then Georgetown University. I then moved to Chicago with my future husband and earned my MBA. I settled down in Colorado where I now work as a fundraiser to Colorado University in Boulder, and I’m expecting my second child in December.

Maggie: What lessons have you carried with you from your experience on the Stanford gymnastics team?

Katy:
From Stanford women’s gymnastics, I took away the “perfect combo.” I learned the balance between individual performance and group success, which has transferred to many things in life. I learned how to push myself and seek perfection, but understand that the bigger picture is more important. I realize that work, family and my friends’ success are greater than my own. Among this I learned the value of hard work. I worked harder during those years than I ever have in my life and I also learned the value of time management and efficiency.

Maggie: What are your favorite memories from being on the team at Stanford?

Katy: During my senior year, we were the first team to go to the Super Six. It was so much fun to able to compete a lot.

Maggie: What are your favorite Stanford memories outside of gymnastics?

Katy:
During my time at Stanford, I worked at the front desk of the Ford Center. Occasionally, I would take the keys and climb up to the roof and I could just see the whole campus. I would pop up there and have a moment of quiet and peace; it was something very special.

Maybe I shouldn’t tell that one! (laughs)

Maggie: Do you have any advice for the girls on the SWG team now?

Katy: Everyone says enjoy every moment. It’s stressful when you’re in it, but even the bad things become good memories. Make good memories, and try to remember it. Have fun. Value your teammates and people that you meet there at Stanford.
