Silver Places Seventh at Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Stanford sophomore Evan Silver placed seventh at 125 pounds to lead the Cardinal at the third-annual Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. As a team, Stanford finished with 30.0 team points (20th overall).

Silver was 5-2 overall in the tournament as the Cardinal’s lone placewinner. After dropping a 12-4 major decision to second-ranked Nicholas Megaludis of Penn State, the Chevy Chase, Md., native defeated Hofstra’s Jamie Franco, 5-3, in the consolation round. A 5-3 loss to Missouri’s Zach Synon put Silver in the seventh-place match where he defeated Pennsylvania’s Caleb Richardson, 7-1.

Fifth-ranked Ryan Mango (133 pounds) suffered two losses on Thursday to go 2-2 overall in the tournament. He was edged 2-1 by No. 17 James Gulibon of Penn State in the quarterfinals. The redshirt senior then fell 8-6 in sudden victory to Missouri’s Matt Manley.

Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, ranked No. 18, went 2-1 on the day and was 3-2 overall in the tournament at 165 pounds. He registered back-to-back 3-1 decisions over Mitchell Wightman of Boston and Garett Hammond of Penn State before falling 6-5 to Navy’s Peyton Walsh.

Redshirt freshman Zach Nevills also finished the tournament 3-2 overall at 184 pounds. He secured a 3-2 overtime decision over Cornell’s William George before being eliminated by Oregon State’s Austin Morehead, 3-2.

The Cardinal returns to The Farm on Jan. 9 as it hosts Pac-12 foe Boise State in Maples Pavilion. The dual will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks at 4:30 p.m. PT.
