VARESE, Italy Stanford lightweight rowers Christine Cavallo and Brittany Presten finished fifth in the lightweight women’s quadruple sculls at the Under-23 World Championships.

Cavallo and Presten were racing Saturday in the A Finals. As part of the five-member crew, the two Cardinal rowers were representing the USA in the last race of the event.

The boat was in the middle of the pack after the first 500 meters, sitting third overall and less than two seconds back of the leader Germany. Moves by Italy and Great Britain over the next 1,000 meters put the Americans back to fifth place where they finished with a time of 6:47.59.

Team USA finished eight seconds ahead of Hungary, while the Germans took gold, Italy silver and Switzerland bronze in the event.

It was a great run for the two young Stanford All-Americans. Presten sat stroke seat and will enter her junior season on The Farm this fall. Cavallo, the first freshman to be named All-American at Stanford, returns for her sophomore campaign.
