VARESE, Italy – Kaess Smit advanced to the A Final of the men’s coxed eight at the Under-23 World Championships in Varese, Italy on Thursday.
Smit, a rising senior at Stanford, sat four seat for the USA as they competed in the first of two heats for the event.
Team USA battled with Australia throughout the race and finished less than two seconds back for second place in the race. The Americans posted a time of 5:40.65 to advance to the A Final on Sunday.
USA and Australia will be joined in the finals by New Zealand and Germany, who took the top two spots, respectively, in heat two. The reps tomorrow will determine who rounds out the field for the A final.
Smit and his U.S. teammates will compete in the final race of the weekend as they are set for a 6 p.m. start in Italy. Smit will try and medal for the second straight year at the U23 World Championships as he claimed bronze in the four in 2013 at Linz, Austria.
