VARESE, Italy Four Stanford rowers were in action Thursday at the Under-23 World Championships with one advancing to the A Finals.

Competing for Sweden, Filippa Karrfelt finished second in the women’s double sculls event to automatically move on to the A Finals this Sunday. Sweden’s double recorded a time of 7:13.59, one second behind France for the top spot.

Karrfelt and her boatmate had work to do after sitting fourth following the first 500 meters. By the halfway point the duo moved up one spot to third. In the home stretch, Sweden made a big charge to overtake the USA for the final automatic qualifying spot.

With a spot in the A Final secured, Karrfelt will have a chance to rest before taking to the race course again on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. in Italy.

Incoming freshman Devin Norder also advanced to the next round. The Osprey, Fla. native, was in the third heat of the lightweight women’s double sculls and representing the USA.

Much like Karrfelt, Norder and her teammate made a push in the final 500 meters to move from third to second and earn the automatic advancement. They posted a time of 7:09.17. Norder qualified for the semifinals, which will take place Saturday evening at 5:26 or 5:33 p.m.

Recent graduate Daphne Martschenko competed in her second race of the regatta. As part of the USA quadruple sculls, Martschenko was in the reps of the event. With a time of 6:51.17, the Americans fell just short of a spot in the A final with a third place finish. Germany and Romania advanced with the top two spots, while the U.S. advance to the B Final on Saturday at 3:11 p.m.

The final Stanford rower to compete was Lilly Tinapple, a rising sophomore representing Australia in heat one of the women’s coxed eight. Tinapple and her squad took third in their heat with a time of 6:33.06 and will next race in the reps tomorrow at 2:36 p.m. in Italy.
