Stanford rising junior, Clemence Couteau was one of 18 players named to the U21 French National Team for the Fintro EuroHockey Junior Championship Tournament.
Couteau, a Bay Area native, takes up the mantle from her mother, a French national, who also played on the French National Team. The tournament takes place July 20-26 in Waterloo, Belgium.
Couteau and France opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Spain. They quickly bounced back by defeating Russia 4-3 the following day. During the game, the French team was three-for-three on short corners, with the winning goal a product of one of these attempts.
“We started off with a score in the first minute, a short corner, and it was 1-0,” said Couteau in an interview with Fintro. "The Russians came back really quickly and made it 1-1 … they tied it up every time until it was 3-3 and we ended up scoring another short corner.”
With the Field Hockey World Cup approaching in two year’s time, the French team looks to keep their momentum. They will continue play on Wednesday, July 23 against England.Additional information and a schedule can be found here.
