OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Stanford men’s rowing was represented well at Club Nationals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. last week as Ryan Hails and Max Freundlich each came away with victories over the course of the five days of racing.
Hails rowed for JRC/MRC/SC and won his first race of the regatta. Competing in the Senior 4x, Hails edged the field by less than a half second. His boat crossed the finish line in 6:21.105, which was .461 ahead of the second place boat.
Freundlich finished off the weekend with a victory in the Intermediate 4x with Vesper Rowing Club. His boat won both the heat race on Saturday and the final on Sunday. The winning time on Sunday was 6:28.041, which was .82 seconds in front of the second place finisher.
Hails and Freundlich each competed in one other event as well. Hails took third in the Intermediate 4x, two spots behind Freundlich. In the Intermediate 8+, Freundlich came in second with a time of 5:54.924 on Friday.
Also competing in the regatta was Erik Holmvik, the rising sophomore classmate of Hails and Freundlich. Holmvik entered into five events and came away with a fifth place finish in the Intermediate 8+ and sixth place finish in the Senior 8+ for TBC Racing. He failed to advance to the finals in the Senior 4+, Intermediate 2- and Intermediate 4+ events.
Signee Will Spencer also traveled to Tennessee. He represented Seattle Area Rowing Club in two events. He tallied a third place finish in the Junior 8+ on Sunday after claiming sixth place in the Intermediate 8+ on Friday.
Rising senior Kaess Smit will represent Stanford and the United States at the Under-23 World Championships this week. He will sit bow seat in the coxed eight. His first race will be Thursday, July 24.
