Stars at Club Nationals

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Stanford lightweight rowing team members Katherine Christel and Jackie Huddle were two of the stars at the Club Nationals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. last week.

Christel, a rising junior human biology major, won both of her races. She teamed with Huddle to lead the pack in both the A Final and heat of the Intermediate Lightweight 2x. The duo finished 6.5 seconds ahead of the next best boat on Friday, winning in a time of 7:43.467. Christel returned to the race course on Sunday for her second victory. She clocked an 8:38.45 to take first place in the Intermediate Lightweight 1x. Huddle would finish fourth in the event with a time of 8:52.656.

Two Stanford signees also competed over the five days of racing. Keagan Hanley of Manhasset, N.Y. was rowing for Harborside in five different events. Isabelle Foster of the Southeastern Connecticut Rowing Club took part in three events.

Hanley placed second in three of her five events, including the Intermediate Lightweight 4+ on Sunday to close out the weekend. She notched second placed finishes in two events over a span of one and a half hours on Friday. She finished the Senior Lightweight 4+ in 7:48.390 and then came back to place second with an 8:24.001 in the Intermediate Lightweight 2-.

In her other two races, Hanley took fourth in the Intermediate Lightweight 2x with a time of 7:59.555 and third in the semifinal of the  Junior A 8+ with a time of 7:09.942.

Foster got better with each event. She started with a fifth place finish in the semifinal of the Junior A 8+ and then took fourth in the semifinal of the Junior A 1x on Thursday. On Sunday, she reached the finals of the Intermediate Lightweight 4+ and finished third with a time of 8:08.483.

This week Christine Cavallo and Brittany Presten will compete at the Under-23 World Championships in Varese, Italy. The duo will be half of the lightweight women’s quadruple skull for the U.S. as Cavallo will sit in the stroke seat and Presten in the bow seat. They will begin racing on Wednesday, July 23.
