Montgomery on Hornung Watch List

Release: 07/07/2014

Stanford wide receiver and kickoff returner Ty Montgomery is one of 47 players named to the 2014 Paul Hornung Award Watch List.

Named earlier Monday to The Maxwell Award watch list for America's College Player of the Year, Montgomery will vie for the Hornung Award, now in its fifth season of honoring the most versatile player in major college football.

The 2014 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2013 statistics, career performance and expectations heading into the 2014 season.

The Louisville Sports Commission successfully launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. Owen Marecic of Stanford, a two-way starter and All-Pac-10 performer at fullback and linebacker, won the inaugural Paul Hornung Award in 2010.

Montgomery is likely to dot all eligible preseason watch lists after the speedy wide receiver and kickoff returner finished second nationally in kickoff return average (30.3) in 2013. Montgomery was the only player on a BCS conference team with two kickoff returns for a touchdown. He finished ninth nationally in all-purpose yards (157.7/game) in 2013, with 2,208 all-purpose yards. The team’s leading pass catcher in 13 of its 14 games of 2013, Montgomery caught 61 passes for 958 yards (15.7 yards per reception) with 10 touchdowns. He was earlier named preseason All-American at specialist by Athlon.

The winner will be honored at the official Paul Hornung Award Banquet sponsored by KentuckyOne Health, held at the Galt House Hotel and Suites in downtown Louisville in late January-2015.

Players from all FBS teams are eligible and appearing on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List is not a prerequisite for winning the Award. The Selection Committee is comprised of 16 national sports journalists and former college and NFL players who vote for finalists then a winner. Their votes are tabulated by public accounting firm Dean Dorton.

Stanford’s season opens Aug. 30 with a 1 p.m. (PT) home game against UC Davis on Pac-12 Networks. The Cardinal plays its first three games at home with USC visiting the Stadium Sept. 6 (12:30 p.m., ABC) and Army visiting Sept. 13 (2 p.m., Pac-12 Net).

Season tickets are on sale with five sections and price levels already sold out. Three-game Mini plans are also on sale now.

Season ticket holders are eligible to purchase individual game tickets for all 2014 home games starting July 8-9. Single-game tickets go on sale July 21 with a special online-only promotion code through Stanford’s Facebook and @GoStanford Twitter account. All tickets are on sale starting July 22.
