SACRAMENTO, Calif. –  Aisling Cuffe was fourth and Jessica Tonn ninth, giving Stanford a pair of top-10 finishes in the women’s 5,000 meters at the USA Track and Field Championships Friday night at Sacramento State.

Cuffe, the NCAA runner-up, ran 15:13.15 and Tonn finished in 15:48.31. They were the second-fastest times ever for each behind only the 15:11.13 and 15:32.26, respectively, at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on May 4.

Cuffe ran much of the race in a lead pack of seven. However, the pack soon dwindled to four, paced by Molly Huddle, with Olympian Shannon Rowbury and NCAA champion Marielle Hall in tow. With three laps to go, Cuffe dropped off the pace.

But as eventual champion Huddle and Rowbury dueled for the victory, Hall faded and Cuffe nearly caught the Texas runner, who held on to finish in 15:12.79. Tonn ran a steady race and finished as the third collegiate runner. It was an impressive performance for Tonn, who was 13th at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., two weeks ago.

The race capped a brilliant year for both. Cuffe, a junior, won the Pac-12 cross country title and was fourth at the NCAA’s. She went on to finish second in the NCAA 5,000 both indoors and outdoors, and her performance at Payton Jordan was a school and Pac-12 record. It also was the second-fastest time ever by an American collegian.

Tonn, a redshirt junior, had her strongest year ever, earning All-America honors in both cross country and outdoor track. The runners complement each other’s styles and often help pull each other along during races.

In the men’s 5,000, Stanford redshirt junior  Erik Olson did not finish, and  Brendan Gregg ’11 was 13th in 13:56.18.

Kori Carter ’14 won her heat of the 400 hurdles, running 56.56 while coasting to victory. She advances to the semifinals Saturday at 1:13 p.m. as the third qualifier.

Also competing Saturday is Garrett Heath ’09 in the men’s 1,500 final at 2:14 p.m.
