FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Lucas Rowley set a personal record in the hammer throw to earn qualification Friday to the NCAA track and field championships.
Rowley was among five Stanford athletes on Day Two of the NCAA West Prelims to earn passage to Eugene, Ore., joining three teammates from Thursday’s action. The meet concludes Saturday with 15 Cardinal competing for even more NCAA spots.
Stanford’s Friday qualifiers were Claudia Saunders and Amy Weissenbach in the women’s 800, Luke Lefebure in the men’s 800, Rowley in the men’s hammer, and Valarie Allman in the women’s discus. Only Rebecca Hammar, among Stanford athletes competing Friday, failed to advance, and that was in the women’s discus.
The five Stanford athletes join Brianna Bain (women’s javelin), Dylan Duvio (men’s pole vault), and Jim Rosa (men’s 10,000).
The top 12 in each event of the two NCAA Prelim meets (the other is in Jacksonville, Fla.) advance to the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene on June 11-14. The class breakdown for Stanford’s qualifiers so far are: four juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen.
Weissenbach (2:04.84) won the first quarterfinal heat of the 800, and Saunders was a close second to NCAA indoor champ Laura Roesler of Oregon in the third heat. Saunders ran 2:03.68, her second-fastest. Both advanced automatically be being among the top three finishers in each heat.
Lefebure was a close second to Arkansas’ Patrick Rono in the first heat of the men’s 400. Lefebure ran successive splits of 54.75 and 54.26 and trailed Rono by only 0.03 at the end.
Rowley had never broken 200 feet in the hammer before, but bested that with a personal best of 202-11 on his first throw.
Allman continued her remarkable rookie year with a throw of 184-4 in the discus. She was the only freshman among the top 25 in Fayetteville.
