Four Stanford men’s water polo standouts will feature on the USA Men’s Senior National Team roster ahead of the FINA Intercontinental Qualification Tournament in Shanghai, China from May 26-31.
Junior Alex Bowen, sophomore Bret Bonanni, redshirt junior Conner Cleary, and freshman Jackson Kimbell will all be part of the 13-man roster that will open pre-tournament training camp at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center May 19 before departing for China days later. After the tournament in Shanghai, the national team will begin a four-game series with Serbia from June 4-8 at four locations in Northern California, with the finale set for June 8 at 3 p.m. at Avery Aquatic Center.
The team opens group play in China against the host nation, South Africa and Brazil, with the last day of competition set for May 31.
Bonanni and Bowen, each named to the ACWPC All-America First Team following the 2013 season, continue their respective runs as mainstays of the senior national team for the second straight year. The duo, along with Cleary and Kimbell, were part of the squad that competed at the Volvo Cup this past February in Hungary.
This past collegiate season the quartet helped lead Stanford to the National Collegiate Championship for the first time since 2008. The Cardinal finished third at the event, defeating St. Francis Brooklyn in the Third-Place Game on Dec. 8, and finished the season with an overall record of 23-6 while also reaching the final of the MPSF Championship.Bonanni led the Cardinal with an MPSF-record 97 goals on the year, while Bowen was second on the team with 71 goals. Cleary scored 21 goals while providing a strong presence for the Cardinal at the two-meter spot, and Kimbell, in his rookie campaign, scored 24 goals as Stanford combined for a total of 413 goals on the season.
