STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford enters the weekend ranked No. 3 in the nation and will be trying to win the school’s first Pac-12 Championship in rowing.

Despite the success of the program that includes a national championship in 2009, the Cardinal has yet to finish first on championship weekend. The team has finished second on seven occasions, including a recent stretch of four straight years from 2008-11.

In two of those seasons, Cal edged Stanford by narrow margins. The closest race in league history was in 2010 when Stanford lost by 0.5 points. The 2009 championship was also close as Cal edged the Cardinal by 3.5 points.

Last year at the Pac-12 Championships, Stanford finished in fifth place. Both eights took fifth in their respective races, while the four placed sixth and the novice eight claimed seventh.

The 2014 championships expects to be one of the most competitive yet. Four teams sit in the top 10 of the rankings and seven in the top 20. The Cardinal’s sweep of the top three races against Cal has them as the top-ranked team from the Pac-12 this week. Cal is one spot behind Stanford at No. 4. Washington (No. 7) and USC (No.8) are also in the top 10. UCLA (No. 12), Washington State (No. 15) and Oregon State (No. 19) are the other ranked schools from the Pac-12.

Stanford gained the top seed for the second varsity eight and varsity four races this weekend. The varsity eight is seeded second behind USC. With the Cardinal not racing in the novice eight all season they enter as the seven seed for that race.

Times for Sunday’s women’s races are 9 a.m. for the novice eight, 9:30 a.m. for the varsity four, 10 a.m. for the second varsity eight and 10:30 a.m. for the varsity eight.

Stanford will also have two individuals competing in the Women’s Collegiate 2- event on Saturday at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma. The event will take place at 2:45 p.m.
