STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 seed Stanford men’s volleyball team will travel to Chicago for an NCAA play-in match against No. 6 seed Erskine College on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. PT at Gentile Arena.
Should the Cardinal (22-8) advance, it would have a rematch of the MPSF finals and take on BYU, the No. 2 seed, in the NCAA semifinals on Thursday, May 1 at 4 p.m. PT.
Before falling in the MPSF finals at BYU on April 26, Stanford had been on a 13-match winning streak. The Cardinal is led by senior two-time first team All-American Brian Cook, who is averaging 3.81 kills and 4.30 points per set while hitting .353. He was joined on the MPSF all-tournament team by sophomore setter James Shaw.
In just its second season of competition, Erskine (21-6) earned an automatic berth by sweeping Mount Olive in the Conference Carolinas tournament championship.
NCAA play-in matches are not a part of the NCAA Championships. The Cardinal would need to defeat Erskine on Tuesday to appear in its first NCAA tournament since 2010, when it brought home the program’s second national title.
Host Loyola University Chicago earned the No. 1 overall seed and will play the winner between No. 4 seed Lewis, which received an at-large berth, and No. 5 seed Penn State, which won the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association to garner an automatic bid.
