NASHVILLE- Stanford junior forward Erica Payne was honored by the NCAA as this year’s Division I women’s basketball Elite 89 award winner Sunday.
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships.
Payne owns a cumulative grade-point average of 3.52 and is majoring in science, technology and society (STS). The Concord native was presented with the award during the under-16 media timeout of the second half of the Maryland-Notre Dame national semifinal contest at the Final Four at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have competed in the sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and competing at the championship.
Stanford takes on Connecticut at 6 p.m. PT tonight in the second national semifinal contest of the night in Nashville.
