OKLAHOMA CITY – Led by redshirt senior Ryan Mango, three Stanford wrestlers won their opening matches at the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Thursday, at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Mango showed poise in his opening match, defeating Rider’s Chuck Zeisloft, 5-2. Leading 3-2 in the third period, the St. Louis, Mo., native registered a takedown with 15 seconds left to secure the win. Mango, the 11th seed at 133 pounds, will face sixth-seeded Mason Beckman of Lehigh in Thursday’s evening session.

Wrestling in his first national tournament, redshirt freshman Jim Wilson won a 3-1 decision over Columbia’s Josh Houldsworth in sudden victory at 165 pounds. Tied 1-1 after regulation, Houldsworth went in on a shot, but Wilson was able to counter and secure a takedown. The Lodi, Calif., native will now face top-seeded David Taylor of Penn State in session two Thursday evening.

Senior 197-pounder Dan Scherer staved off the No. 16 seed Alex Polizzi of Northwestern with an 11-9 decision. With the score tied 4-4 after the first, Polizzi chose down and tallied an escape to open the second. Scherer countered with a takedown and three near fall points to go up 9-5.

In the third, the clock stopped for injury time for Scherer allowing Polizzi to go in the down position. A quick escape and a takedown by Polizzi cut Scherer’s lead to 9-8. Scherer then registered an escape before being taken down again. He escaped for a final time with 30 seconds left and was able to hold on for the win. Scherer’s next opponent is No. 1 seed Nick Heflin of Ohio State.

Redshirt sophomore Evan Silver dropped his first match of the tournament, a 7-3 decision to Iowa State’s Earl Hall at 125 pounds. After falling behind 2-1 in the opening period, Silver chose to start the second in the down position. Hall quickly scored two near fall points and Silver was unable to overcome the deficit.

Silver will face North Carolina’s Nathan Kraisser in the wrestlebacks in session two. He defeated Kraisser earlier this season, 8-6 in sudden victory, in a dual in Chapel Hill.

Redshirt senior Kyle Meyer fell 17-3 to fifth-seeded Matthew Brown of Penn State in his first match at 174 pounds. Meyer will no await the winner between Army’s Brian Harvey and Chattanooga’s Levi Clemons in the wrestlebacks.
