Seven on Columbus Voyage

STANFORD, Calif. – Seven Stanford fencers will be in Columbus, Ohio over the course of the next four days for the NCAA Fencing Championships.

Four men and three women will be competing for a chance at the national championship. The women’s fencers will compete on Thursday and Friday while the men’s fencers will be in action on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting things off for the women will be senior Francesca Bassa and sophomore Vivian Kong in women’s epee at 11:30 a.m. Kong, the NCAA West Regional Champion, is 61-7 on the year and 7-4 in matches against the 24 qualifiers. Bassa took second in the regional and holds a 57-8 record for the season. She is 6-5 against NCAA Championship qualifiers.

Freshman Alexa Rohan will be in her first NCAA Championships after finishing second at the NCAA West Regional. She has compiled a 49-13 record in her first season with an 8-6 mark against NCAA qualifiers.

Sophomore Alexander Massialas and freshman Stephen Aman will be the first men to compete. Massialas will be trying to win his second straight individual title. He went undefeated at the NCAA West Regional to claim his second regional crown. He has just two losses on the season and is 34-2 overall. Against the other 23 selections for the NCAA Championships, he is 9-2. Aman will make his nationals debut after earning an at large bid. He is 36-15 on the year with a 3-6 ledger against his future NCAA opponents.

Senior Jake Harbour and sophomore Paul Riviere will wrap up Stanford’s travel party. Harbour won the regional for the third time in four seasons while Riviere placed second. This season Harbour has compiled a 35-21 record with a 6-5 record against NCAA qualifiers. Riviere led the Stanford men with 44 victories compared to just 17 losses. He owns a 5-6 record against the other 23 in the field this weekend.

Complete results will be available on gostanford.com at the conclusion of each day. Tickets for the event can be purchased through Ohio State at a cost of $10 daily for adults or $30 for all sessions.
