FRESNO, Calif. – Stanford scored the first eight goals and coasted to a 19-5 victory over Fresno State in the Cardinal’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse opener Wednesday at Bulldog Stadium.
The Cardinal (3-1 overall, 1-0 MPSF), ranked No. 19 in the IWLCA coaches’ poll, got three goals from freshman Alex Poplawski and got goals from 13 players against Fresno (1-4, 0-2). Rachel Ozer, Mackenzie Tesei, Elizabeth Cusick, and Kelsey Murray had two apiece.
Stanford was able to use all available players, which was a benefit as it began a road stretch of three games in five days. The team leaves early Thursday morning for a Friday game at No. 11 Towson (Md.), and follows at No. 14 Georgetown on Sunday.
“I’m really pleased with the dominance our team came out with, especially on draw controls,” Stanford coach Amy Bokker said. “A lot of our younger players played with confidence tonight. We’re looking to carry that confidence into the weekend as we prepare for two great opponents.”
Two goals by the freshman Murray in the first five minutes help spark an 8-0 lead through the first 27 minutes. And four goals in the final 1:25 of the half – two each by Ozer and Cusick – gave the Cardinal a 15-2 halftime lead.
Stanford dominated possession thanks largely to winning 19 of 25 draws, with five won by Tesei and three each by Hannah Farr and Lucy Dikeou. Farr was one of the few Stanford players not to score, snapping her streak of goal-scoring games at 12.
Another highlight was the first collegiate appearance, and the first goal, by freshman Grace Goettman, causing much celebration on the Stanford sideline.
Ozer, a senior, also had three assists. She leads the team with nine goals and has 76 in her career. One more will move her into Stanford’s top-15 all-time goal-scoring list.
