LA CORUÑA, Spain – Sophomore fencer Alexander Massialas was in La Coruña, Spain on Saturday to compete in the Foil World Cup Cidade da Coruña.

Playing in the second World Cup event of 2014, Massialas added four points to his international total after ranking 19th in the 176-person field. He suffered a loss in the round of 32. The four points bring his current total to 116 on the senior circuit. He has placed in the top 20 in all nine competitions over the course of the last year.

Massialas entered the day as the No. 9 seed after receiving byes through pool play and the preliminary table rounds due to his world ranking. He won his first match of the day, 15-7, against Maxime Pauty of France to advance to the round of 32. His next opponent was Maximilien Van Haaster of Canada. In a close match, Van Haaster was able to come out on top 15-12.

The United States was represented in the final 64 by four fencers. Massialas joined Gerek Meinhardt, Miles Chamley-Watson and Race Imboden. Massialas was one of three to win their first match. Only Meinhardt, the No. 1 seed overall, made it to the round of 16 and that was as far as he would go as he lost to the eventual tournament champion Jianfei Ma of China.

The team portion of the Foil World Cup event will take place on Sunday.
