Card Tops Incarnate Word

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford synchronized swimming team defeated the University of Incarnate Word in its home opener, 95-90, on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center.

“The team had solid swims on Saturday,” said second year head coach Sara Lowe. “UIW is a strong competitor this season, so I was excited to see our routines stack up well against their athletes and their routines.”

Stanford claimed the top two spots in the duet event. Cardinal freshmen Isabella Park and Marisa Tashima finished first, while junior Megan Hansley and sophomore Evelyna Wang took second. UIW’s Carolyne Vasconsellow and Carolina Davidson were third, while the Cardinals’ Katy Wiita and Sydney Sprinkle were fourth.

The Cardinal also claimed the top spot in the trio as Hansley and Wang were joined by senior Leigh Haldeman. Park, Tashima and sophomore Mina Shah came in fourth.

UIW’s Emilee Wills won the solo competition with Stanford sophomore Carolyn Morrice coming in second. UIW also won the team swim. Competing for Stanford was Haldeman, Hansley, Wang, Tashima, Park, Shah and Morrice.

“We do have areas and skills to improve upon, but the girls have a strong motivation and desire to work, so I know we will be ready four our national championships in March,” added Lowe.

Park won the elements competition on Saturday, while Tashima was second and Hansley finished third. Haldeman also placed in the top-5, coming in fifth.

UIW came out on top in the figures and elements competitions held on Sunday, 22-11. Park won the Elements, while Tashima took third and Hansley was fourth. In the B Figures, UIW scored points with six swimmers, while the Cardinal did not enter the event.

Stanford will travel to Gainesville, Fla., Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 for competitions at the University of Florida.
