STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford has been picked to finish in sixth place of the Pac-12 Conference by the league’s coaches, the conference office announced Thursday.

The Cardinal collected 60 points to be placed one spot behind Arizona (61 points) in fifth. The top four include Oregon State (98), Oregon (86), UCLA (84) and Arizona State (73). The Beavers picked up nine first-place votes, while the Ducks and Bruins each secured one.

Stanford returns seven position players that started more than 20 games a year ago, including preseason All-American Alex Blandino. The junior, who was a freshman All-American in 2012, hit .270 last year with seven home runs and 32 RBI. He will be joined in the infield by senior second baseman Danny Diekroeger, a .299 hitter in 2013.

Catchers Brant Whiting and Wayne Taylor both return, as well. Whiting led the team with a .344 batting clip and Taylor hit .270 while also starting in the outfield and designated hitter on occasion. The pair will be handling a restructured pitching staff after the departure of No. 1 starter Mark Appel.

Junior lefty John Hochstatter is the Cardinal’s leading returning pitcher after going 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 2013. Sam Lindquist (2-2, 3.46 ERA) and Logan James (3-3, 4.56 ERA), who each threw over 40 innings during last year’s campaign, will return to the bullpen.

Senior right-hander A.J. Vanegas missed most of 2013 with an injury, but looks to return to his sophomore form. He threw 65.1 innings in 2012 and finished with a 4-0 record and 2.62 ERA.

Stanford opens the 2014 season at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond against Rice on Feb. 14. The 4:30 p.m. matchup will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
