Two Days of Fencing

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford fencing teams will be traveling to Evanston, Ill. this weekend to conclude the regular season at the two-day Northwestern Duals.

The No. 10 Stanford men’s team has 12 scheduled dual matches over the course of two days with six on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. and six more on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday’s schedule features No. 6 Ohio State, No. 3 Princeton, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 8 Penn, Wayne State and North Carolina. On Sunday the Cardinal will take on Duke, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, UC San Diego and Northwestern.

Entering the weekend, the Stanford men are 4-0 on the season with wins over Cal Tech, Florida, UC San Diego and Air Force during the Western Invitational on Jan. 11. Leading the way individually that weekend were Paul Riviere (12-0) and Ben Riviere (11-1) in epee, Alex Massialas (9-0) and Jusitn Lee (9-3) in foil and David Beam (10-2) in sabre.

The Stanford women’s team has 13 matches scheduled for this weekend. They will start each day with matches at 8 a.m. On Saturday they are slated to go head-to-head with No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 5 Ohio State, North Carolina, Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 1 Princeton, Duke and Wayne State. Sunday’s opponents will be No. 8 Penn, Tufts, No. 9 Temple, UC San Diego, Detroit Mercy and Lawrence.

The Cardinal had a dual match against Northwestern on Jan. 10 and then faced several teams in the Western Invitational on Jan. 11. Stanford came out of the weekend with a 4-2 record, losing to Northwestern twice and beating Cal Tech, Florida, UC San Diego and Air Force. The top individuals that weekend for the Cardinal were Francesca Bassa (16-2), Vivian Kong (16-2) and May Peterson (12-6) in epee, Eliza Klyce (11-7) in foil and Stephanie Wang (12-5) and Alexa Rohan (11-5) in sabre.

This weekend’s events will be the final competitions for Stanford before they compete at the NCAA Regionals March 8-9 in Pasadena, Calif.
