STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford gymnast Akash Modi was named the College Gymnastics Association National Gymnast of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Cardinal’s season-opening victory at No. 7 California, as announced Thursday by the organization.
Modi earned three individual titles in his collegiate debut, finishing first in the all-around (88.150), floor (15.350) and parallel bars (15.250). He also contributed big scores on vault (15.000), rings (14.650) and pommel horse (14.250).
The freshman from Morganville, N.J., helped lead No. 3 Stanford to a 431.100-425.650 victory at No. 7 California. The Cardinal outscored the Golden Bears in four of six events. It was Stanford’s eighth consecutive victory over Cal dating back to the 2013 season-opener, also in Berkeley.
The national award is the first of Modi’s collegiate career. He was honored earlier this week as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week.
Stanford will see Cal again this weekend in its own home-opener on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
