Friday Marks Home Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 4 Stanford men's volleyball team (1-0) will host eighth-ranked Lewis University (1-1) on Friday, Jan. 10 for its home opener in Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal will also take on Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 11 in its lone match of the season in Burnham Pavilion. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.

ASICS UCSB Tournament Recap
Stanford placed seventh at the 50th ASICS UCSB Tournament last weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Cardinal played in four best-of-three matches on Friday before defeating No. 2 UCLA in four sets in its season opener on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Brian Cook was one of four Cardinal hitters who reached double-digit kills with 16. Sophomore setter James Shaw led the balanced attack, racking up 53 assists. Stanford hit .433 as a team and held UCLA to a .252 clip.

Rankings
Stanford moved up in the AVCA Division I-II top-15 to No. 4 this week and received two first-place votes. Lewis enters the week ranked No. 8 in the poll.

About Lewis
Lewis (1-1) opened the season last week with a four-set loss to then-No. 1 and defending national champion UC Irvine (21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-23) in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers bounced back with a four-set win over then-No. 3 BYU (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23). Junior outside hitter Greg Petty leads Lewis after two matches, averaging 3.63 kills and 4.44 points per set. Redshirt junior Geoff Powell has added 3.50 kills and 3.88 points per set.

About Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon (0-0) will play its season opener on Friday, Jan. 10 at Pacific. GCU was picked to finish fourth in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association preseason coaches' poll and is led by outside hitter Ben Ponnet. The senior is a two-time all-conference selection.
