STANFORD, Calif. – David Shaw is among five finalists for the Marathon Oil Corporation Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, as announced by the American Heart Association. Shaw is joined by David Bailiff (Rice), Art Briles (Baylor), Mark Dantonio (Michigan State) and Gus Malzahn (Auburn) with the winner being selected Jan. 15.

Shaw has guided Stanford to a second straight Pac-12 championship with the Cardinal set to play Michigan State in the 100th Rose Bowl Game. Stanford (11-2) has defeated six nationally-ranked teams this season, which is tops in the nation. The Cardinal is ranked fifth in the final BCS standings and will look for its third 12-win season over the last four campaigns.

Stanford is the only team at the FBS level to win at least 11 games in each of the last four years. Stanford is also the first team since Oklahoma (2003) with a consensus All-American on offense, defense and at kick returner.

The 28th annual event on Wednesday, January 15 in Houston, Texas will bring together the nation’s top performing college coaches and sports enthusiasts to raise funds for heart disease in the name of Paul “Bear” Bryant.  Marathon Oil Corporation is again generously supporting the American Heart Association and serving as the title sponsor of the event.

At the event, R.C. Slocum, one of the longest-serving and winningest football coaches in Texas A&M history, will also be recognized with the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award at the event. The award recognizes excellence in coaching on and off the field during a career, allowing recipients to take their place in history alongside legends such as Paul “Bear” Bryant.  Recent Lifetime Achievement recipients include Barry Switzer, Vince Dooley, Bobby Bowden, Hayden Fry and LaVell Edwards.

Funds raised benefit heart disease and stroke research, community education and outreach programs of the American Heart Association.  For more information on the Bryant Awards, or to purchase tickets or a table for the event, visit or call 713-610-5000.
