Cross Country Season in Review

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford cross country teams continued one of the sport’s enduring traditions, by both qualifying for the NCAA Championships. That’s 20 consecutive seasons.

Considering only two teams in each of the nation’s nine regions advance directly to the NCAA’s, the accomplishment is even more remarkable. The tradition continued thanks to a near-flawless day in Sacramento at the NCAA West Regional.

The Cardinal men repeated as champion and captured their fourth title in five years, and the Cardinal women, ranked fifth in the field, powered to a second-place finish and punched a ticket to nationals.

Just as striking were the season’s individual accomplishments of juniors Aisling Cuffe and Jim Rosa. Cuffe’s victory at the Pac-12 Championships nearly was mirrored by Rosa’s runner-up finish in the men’s race.

At the NCAA’s, both shone again, with Cuffe finishing fourth and Rosa fifth. No other school in the country had top-five finishers each race. Cuffe earned the highest finish by a Stanford woman since Arianna Lambie was fourth in 2006. Rosa, who placed 166th in the same race a year earlier, became Stanford’s highest non-Chris Derrick men’s finisher since the same year. Derrick was a four-year All-America.

The Stanford men were ranked No. 29 early in the season, but surprised many by climbing to No. 4 before finishing in 19th place at NCAA’s. The men will graduate three seniors from its NCAA top seven – No. 2 Erik Olson, No. 3 Michael Atchoo, and No. 5 Tyler Stutzman.

Next year, Stanford should benefit from the return of Joe Rosa, Stanford’s No. 1 in 2012 and a sixth-place Pac-12 finisher that year, and Thomas Graham, a U.S. junior national cross country team competitor. Both were out with ailments, but will join the veterans and a strong group of freshmen, all but one of whom redshirted. The exception was Sean McGorty, Stanford’s No. 1 at the Pre-Nationals.

The women will graduate only All-America Jessica Tonn, the Stanford Invitational champion, from its top seven. Besides Cuffe, next year’s squad should be mostly of sophomores and juniors. This year, three sophomores – Cami Chapus, Megan Lacy, and Rebecca Mehra – competed regularly for the team’s No. 3 spot.

With so much talent, a 21st consecutive season of Stanford teams in the NCAA’s could come to fruition. After all, it’s a tradition.
