Senior forward Chiney Ogwumike was named Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday. The honor is her third of the season and the 12th of her career, extending her conference record.
Ogwumike paced the Cardinal to the 2013 Hardwood Tournament of Hope title with a 3-0 showing in Puerto Vallarta last week. Over victories against No. 16/22 Purdue, Florida Gulf Coast and South Dakota State, Ogwumike averaged 25.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and shot 78.0 percent (32-for-41) from the field.
Wednesday, Ogwumike went 11-for-13 from the field with a double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds in the Cardinal’s 83-59 win over Florida Gulf Coast, a victory that was the 900th in the career of head coach Tara VanDerveer, making her just the fifth women’s basketball head coach to join the exclusive club.
The consensus Preseason All-American and national player of the year candidate has now captured the Pac-12’s weekly honor three of a possible four times this season, previously earning it Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. She has helped lead the No. 6/5 Cardinal to a 7-1 record through the season’s first month, currently leading the Pac-12 in scoring (25.8 ppg) and ranking second in rebounding (11.5 rpg) and field-goal percentage (63.4).
At the career level, Ogwumike is just 24 points away from becoming the fifth member of Stanford’s 2,000-Point/1,000-Rebound Club. She would join Jeanne Ruark Hoff (1978-81, ’83), Nicole Powell (2000-04), Jayne Appel (2006-10) and older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike (2008-12). She is also just 53 rebounds behind Kayla Pedersen’s Pac-12 and Stanford record of 1,266.Stanford is on its annual two-week break for final exams and will return to action Saturday, Dec. 14 against No. 24/24 Gonzaga. That game will begin a three-game homestand before Stanford breaks at Christmas, as the Cardinal will also host New Mexico (Monday, Dec. 16) and No. 3/4 Tennessee (Saturday, Dec. 21). All three games will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
