Hutchins Grabs National Honor

Release: 11/26/2013

Stanford goalkeeper Drew Hutchins was named Top Drawer Soccer’s National Player of the Week and to the outlet’s National Team of the Week Tuesday. The honor is for the week of Nov. 18-24.

Hutchins, a senior from Morrisville, Pa., had his name in nearly every category of the scoresheets last week as Stanford went 1-0-1 and advanced past Loyola Marymount and No. 15-seed Cal State Northridge to reach the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16. In Thursday night’s first-round match against LMU, Hutchins, joining the Cardinal’s last-ditch attack in the final minute, assisted on Zach Batteer’s equalizer with 17 seconds remaining when he nodded Jimmy Callinan’s throw-in into the path of the Cardinal’s leading scorer.

After 20 minutes of scoreless extra time, the match went to penalties, where, with the teams knotted at 2-apiece entering the fifth and final round, Hutchins stepped out of net and fired home to put the Cardinal in front 3-2. He promptly returned to his line and made the match-winning save on LMU’s final attempt to send Stanford through.

Facing Cal State Northridge in Sunday’s second round, Hutchins directed a Cardinal defense that allowed just one shot on goal and picked up his fifth clean sheet of the season. The only time he was called into action for a save was in the final minutes, when he secured an offering from Matador goalkeeper Adam Hobbs that bounced through a crowd in the box.

Stanford (10-6-4) will face No. 2-seed Washington this Sunday in the third round. The Cardinal has now reached the Round of 16 in each of its past five NCAA Tournament appearances (2000-02, 2009, 2013) and is one of just four unseeded teams remaining in the draw.
