The Stanford defense clamped down on Long Beach State over the second and third periods Sunday as the Cardinal extended its winning streak to seven with an 11-8 win over the 49ers.
Alex Bowen posted a hat trick and Bret Bonanni scored twice to pace the Cardinal (17-4, 5-1 MPSF), which stayed on pace with the top of the conference.
Adam Abdulhamid, BJ Churnside, Conner Cleary, Nick Hoversten, Forrest Watkins and Charlie Wiser all added goals for the Cardinal as the offense forced 17 saves out of 49er goalie Pavo Ljepopio. In the Stanford cage, Drew Holland made 11 saves for the Cardinal.
The game featured a high-scoring opening period as the 49ers took leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 before Abdulhamid struck just before the end of the frame to make it 4-4.
Stanford would then open the second period with a three-goal run to make it 7-4, but Long Beach State would score 1:36 before the break to make it 7-5 at the break, then Zachary Kappos, who would score four goals in the day, added a second minutes into the third period to pull to within one at 7-6.
At that point, Holland and the Cardinal defense took over, limiting the 49ers for the rest of the frame as Stanford’s offense built the lead back up to three at 9-6. Churnside and Bonanni would open the fourth period with goals to get the Cardinal lead to 11-6, and the defense would allow only a pair of goals over the final two-plus minutes to wrap up the victory.
