GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Novice Eight captured a gold finish at the Head of the American to lead the Stanford Women’s Rowing team in its 2013-14 season debut on Saturday.
"It was nice to break up the training with a race for the entire team," said head coach Yasmin Farooq. "This is an enthusiastic group with an outstanding work ethic, and they did a really good job jumping into a variety of lineups this weekend. I'm sure they also appreciated the glimpse into the excellent competition that lies within the Pac-12. The freshmen had a great weekend of bonding capped off with an impressive win In the novice 8."
The Novice Eight claimed a victory in what was the collegiate debut of the nine rowers. The group posted a time of 18:02.0 to finish in front of two boats from Cal for the top spot. Making the collegiate debut were Lilly Tinapple, Karen Munyan, Ruth Narode, Emily Carrolo, Emmie Kehoe, Cynthia Nelson, Dani Lucas and coxswain Rachael Stryer.
Farooq utilized the opportunity to put several rowers in multiple races to kick off the year. Along with the winning Novice Eight, Stanford had four entries in both the Collegiate 2- and Collegiate 4+ events. They also raced two boats in the Women’s Collegiate 8+ race.
The A Boat was impressive in the Collegiate Women’s 4+ race. Lilly Tinapple, Filippa Karrfelt, Ruth Narode, Christina Bax and coxswain Katie Lopez finished second overall with a time of 19:04.7. Other finishers for Stanford were the B Boat (7th), D Boat (15th) and C Boat (19th).
In the Women’s Collegiate 8+, the A boat crossed the finish line in 17:26.2 for fifth place while the B boat ended up 15th with a time of 18:10.9.
Four pairs raced in the Women’s Collegiate 2- final. The top finisher for the Cardinal among the 26 entries was the A boat of Katie Toothman and Filippa Karrfelt in fifth place with a time of 20:34.2. Right behind them in sixth place was the B Boat with a time of 20:45.1. The D Boat was tied for 14th and the C Boat was in 16th.
Next up for Stanford will be the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash. next Sunday Nov. 3.
