Fourth-ranked Stanford men's water polo heads to Irvine to play in the UCI invitational this Saturday and Sunday at UCI's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Cardinal (8-2) enters the tournament as the fourth seed overall and the top seed in Group D, which also contains No. 5 California, No. 13 UC San Diego and No. 14 UC Davis. Stanford opens tournament play against UC Davis (5-6) at 10:50 a.m., and depending on the result will play either California or UCSD Saturday afternoon.
Stanford got back into the win column last Saturday, defeating Santa Clara 20-5 in the 2013 home opener at Avery Aquatic Center. Sophomore Bret Bonanni scored six goals to lead the way while Griffin Bolan and Alex Bowen each posted a hat trick. In all, eight different Cardinal players scored in the victory.
On the year Bonanni leads the Cardinal with 43 goals, followed by Bowen (29), BJ Churnside (15) and Forrest Watkins (13).
Defensively, freshman Drew Holland is making 8.14 saves per game with a goals-against average of 6.76, and senior Scott Platshon made five saves in last weekend's win over Santa Clara and averages 7.08 a game.
This Saturday's opener will be the second matchup of the season between the Cardinal and Aggies, as Stanford claimed a 17-5 win three weeks ago in the NorCal Invitational opener in Pleasant Hill. Stanford took third place at that tournament, defeating California 12-10 in the third-place game.
Following this weekend's tournament the Cardinal will return home to host No. 1 UCLA Saturday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. followed by a matchup with UC Davis Sunday, Oct. 20 at 12 p.m.
