STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford junior wide receiver Ty Montgomery has been added to the 2013 Watch List for the 77th Maxwell Award, in an announcement made by the Maxwell Football Club as well as to the Biletnikoff Watch List by that award's national selection committee.
Montgomery proved to be the difference maker in last Saturday’s 31-28 win over 15th-ranked Washington for the fifth-ranked Cardinal. The junior, who was named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week, amassed 290 all-purpose yards including a school-record 204 kickoff return yards.
Montgomery’s evening began with a game-opening 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the first by a Cardinal player since 2009. Twenty-six of Montgomery’s 35 rushing yards came on a first-quarter Stanford drive, giving him 125 all-purpose yards on his first two offensive touches.
The wide receiver added a 39-yard receiving touchdown before halftime and a 68-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.
Through five games Montgomery leads Stanford with 23 receptions for 383 yards (16.7 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. He leads one of the country’s most prolific kick return units with 436 yards on 16 attempts, an average of 33.5 yards per return.
The Biletnikoff Award is presented annually to the nation’s outstanding college football receiver (the award defines receiver as any player who catches a pass) by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on October 29th and three finalists for each award will be announced November 25th. The winners of the 2013 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 12th. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 7, 2014.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2013 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
The undefeated Cardinal puts its 5-0 record on the line when it travels to Utah for a 3 p.m. (PT) meeting to be televised on Pac-12 Network.
