Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike, a consensus All-American and national player of the year finalist last season, headlined the 2013-14 “Wade Watch” list announced Tuesday morning by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Ogwumike is one of three Pac-12 players on the list, being joined by California’s Brittany Boyd and Gennifer Brandon. Connecticut leads all schools with four players on the list.
It is Ogwumike’s third straight season on the list. Last year, she turned in a record year, becoming the first player in Pac-12 history to capture the conference’s Triple Crown, leading the loop in scoring (22.4 ppg), rebounding (11.8 rpg) and field-goal percentage (58.3). Her performance helped Stanford to a 33-3 record, its 13th straight Pac-12 regular season title, seventh straight Pac-12 Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
En route she earned a slew of honors, being named to the WBCA Coaches’ All-America Team for the second year in a row and being voted to the Associated Press All-America First Team a year after making the second team. Ogwumike was named Pac-12 Player of the Year for the first time in her career and also nabbed her second straight Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award. She also received a pair of votes, the second-most of any player, in the Associated Press’ National Player of the Year election last March.
Her total of 466 rebounds last season broke the single-season Pac-12 record held by older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike (376 – 2009-10) and she enters this season with 1,121 career rebounds, just 147 away from breaking the Pac-12 record of 1,266 held by former Stanford teammate Kayla Pedersen (2007-11). Additionally, Ogwumike set the Stanford single-game rebounding record with 24 last Feb. 24 against Oregon.
Stanford opens the 2013-14 season with a trip to the East Coast in early November, visiting Boston College Nov. 9 before taking on defending national champion Connecticut in a nationally-televised contest Monday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2. Ogwumike is one of four starters returning for the Cardinal, being joined by junior point guard Amber Orrange, redshirt senior center Mikaela Ruef and senior guard Sara James.
