The honors are the first such for any Stanford player on the season.
Montgomery proved to be the difference maker in last Saturday’s 31-28 win over Washington for the fifth-ranked Cardinal. The junior amassed 290 all-purpose yards including a school-record 204 kickoff return yards.
Montgomery’s evening began with a game-opening 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the first by a Cardinal player since 2009. Twenty-six of Montgomery’s 35 rushing yards came on a first-quarter Stanford drive, giving him 125 all-purpose yards on his first two offensive touches.
The wide receiver added a 39-yard receiving touchdown before halftime and a 68-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.
Murphy was a force for the Cardinal defense with six tackles, 2.0 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry against the Huskies. The fifth-year senior outside linebacker tipped a fourth-quarter pass which led to A.J. Tarpley’s red-zone interception.
Murphy enters Saturday’s game at Utah tied for eighth in program history with 21.5 career sacks.
The undefeated Cardinal puts its 5-0 record on the line when it travels to Utah for a 3 p.m. (PT) meeting to be televised on Pac-12 Network.
