Former Stanford women’s basketball All-Americans Jayne Appel ’10 and Nnemkadi Ogwumike ’12 were among 33 players to accept invitations to attend the 2013 USA Women’s National Team mini-camp set for Oct. 4-6 at the Cox Pavilion practice gym in Las Vegas.
Eleven Olympic Gold Medalists will also be part of the group at the mini-camp run by 2013-16 USA National Team head coach Geno Auriemma.
Appel and Ogwumike played two seasons together at Stanford (2008-10), being named to the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team in 2010 and each capturing a Pac-10 Player of the Year award (Appel in 2009, Ogwumike in 2010). Stanford went a combined 69-5 over their two seasons together, winning the Pac-10 double (regular season and tournament titles in the same season) and reaching the Final Four each year in addition to appearing in the national championship game in 2010.
Appel, a two-time WBCA All-American (2009-10), was part of the USA Basketball World Championship Team that claimed gold at the FIBA World Championship in 2010. She previously won international gold with the USA at the 2006 U18 FIBA Americas Championship and at the 2007 Pan-Am Games.
Ogwumike finished her Stanford career in 2012 as the school’s second three-time WBCA All-American (2010-12) and a two-time conference player of the year (2010, 2012). Like Appel she has also previously captured international gold with USA Basketball, claiming the prize at the 2008 FIBA Americas Championship, 2009 U19 World Championship and the 2011 World University Games. Ogwumike was also tabbed for the USA Basketball Select Team in April 2010.
USA Basketball will use the mini-camp to identify players for the USA National Team pool, from which the 2014 USA World Championship Team will be selected. Invitations to attend the training camp were issued by the USA Basketball Women's National Team Player Selection Committee.
