Stanford men's soccer returns to Laird Q. Cagan Stadium for a three-game homestand beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. against Grand Canyon.
Friday's match is also Team Day. All youth, middle school and high school soccer players and teams can get a general admission ticket to the match by going online to the Stanford soccer ticket home page and entering the promo code TEAMDAY.
The Cardinal (1-1-1) recorded its first win of the campaign last Saturday at Santa Clara as Eric Verso tallied his first goal of the season and the Stanford defense picked up its first clean sheet of 2013 with a 1-0 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Drew Hutchins and the Cardinal defense limited the Broncos to just five shots, with Hutchins corralling the one shot on frame without much trouble for his only save of the match. It marked his first shutout after posting five clean sheets last season.
The back line will go for its second straight shutout Friday night when it hosts Division I newcomers Grand Canyon. After making the jump from Division II, where it was a mainstay in that level's postseason, the Antelopes joined the Western Athletic Conference for the 2013-14 season. The Antelopes, helmed by Petar Draksin in his 21st season, enter Friday's contest with a 1-2-1 record and last week played to a 2-2 draw with Stetson. forward Kyle Ciliento leads the Antelopes in scoring, netting three of the team's five goals thus far in 2013.
Friday's match will be the first meeting between the schools, and for the Cardinal the homestand will continue next weekend against Charleston (Sept. 20) and Colgate (Sept. 22).
