Stanford men’s soccer collected a 2-0 win at Sacramento State Saturday night in its final tuneup ahead of the 2013 season.

Austin Meyer and Zach Batteer bagged goals during the first 10 minutes of the second half and goalkeeper Drew Hutchins made a pair of saves as the Cardinal finished its exhibition slate on a winning note.

The Cardinal opens the 2013 campaign Friday night, hosting No. 2 Maryland at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The weekend concludes Sunday with a 4 p.m. match against No. 3 Georgetown that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Stanford outshot Sacramento State 14-8 for the match and got great contribution from its midfield as Aaron Kovar and JJ Koval assisted on the Cardinal goals, respectively.

Stanford wasted little time forcing the Sacramento State defense into action as freshman Jordan Morris forced a save from Hornet goalkeeper Cesar Castillo in the third minute and Batteer put Castillo into action in the 10th minute. The attack continued with Morris and Kovar going wide until Sacramento State finally forced a Hutchins save in the 24th minute.

Neither side would concede over the opening 45 minutes despite the teams combining for 14 shots. It wouldn’t be until the 49th minute that the Cardinal had a breakthrough, as a Stanford corner kick was headed out to Meyer who sent it home past new Sacramento State goalkeeper James Del Curto for the match’s first goal.

The Cardinal continued to press after Meyer’s goal as Brandon Vincent sent a header high off of a Bobby Edwards corner kick three minutes later. But at the 55th minute Batteer would latch on to a Koval pass and slot home past Del Curto from 10 feet out to double the advantage.

After the Cardinal forced a save from Del Curto in the 64th minute, neither team would get a shot off until the 86th minute. Freshman Andrew Epstein relieved Hutchins in the 81st minute and maintained the shutout to preserve the Stanford defense’s clean sheet over 180 minutes of exhibition action.
