MEDELLIN, Colombia – Justin Brinkley and Claudia Saunders are deep into the ninth month of their freshman track and field seasons, but the Stanford runners will reach their conclusion this weekend at the Pan Am Junior Championships.

Brinkley and Saunders are among five Stanford athletes, including three incoming freshmen, to compete in the 19-and-under championship of the Western Hemisphere from Friday through Sunday. The meet has taken place every two years since its inception in 1980.

Brinkley (men’s 1,500 meters), Saunders (women’s 800), Dylan Duvio (men’s pole vault), and Megan Glassman (women’s javelin) will compete for the United States. Scott Buttinger (men’s 800) competes for Canada. Each qualified by finishing among the top two in their national junior championships, and meeting the world junior standard for their event.

It seems so long ago when Brinkley and Saunders made their Stanford debut at the UW Preview indoor meet at University of Washington on Jan. 12. Brinkley was fourth in the 800 and ran a leg on the 4x800 relay. Saunders was fourth in the 600 and ran in the 4x400. Brinkley went on to win the U.S. junior championship in the 1,500 and Saunders was second in the 800.
