GoStanford.com presents the third and final installment of its Stanford men's soccer 2013 Preview today as the Cardinal is one day away from the official opening of preseason training camp.
The Cardinal, which returns All-Pac-12 performers in midfielders JJ Koval and Aaron Kovar, and forward Zach Batteer, as well as incumbent starting goalkeeper Drew Hutchins, reports to The Farm for meetings and team photos Wednesday, Aug. 14. The squad makes its exhibition debut next Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., hosting Sonoma State at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
In today's video installment, head coach Jeremy Gunn discusses the Cardinal's goals for the upcoming 2013 campaign. On top of aiming to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, Gunn has his Cardinal squad primed to continue its improved play on both ends of the pitch. Last year the Cardinal outshot opponents by a 306-188 margin, and shut out its opponents six times.
Batteer is the team's top returning scorer, having bagged six goals in 2012, while Aaron Kovar and fellow sophomore Eric Verso each scored three times. Koval, the captain, scored twice with a pair of assists while manning the Cardinal midfield. Hutchins, who took over the No. 1 spot in net last season, was between the posts for five of the team's shutouts in 2012.
Joining this group is a talented eight-man group of freshman which makes its Stanford debut in 2013. Goalies Nico Corti (Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura HS) and Andrew Epstein (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre HS), forwards Mark Verso (Tujunga, Calif./St. Francis HS) and Jordan Morris (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island HS), midfielder Trevor Hyman (Irvine, Calif./Vista Grande HS) and defenders Cameron Chesnutt (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), Marshall Glover (Alpharetta, Ga./Westminster Schools) and Brian Nana-Sinkam (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS) begin their Cardinal careers this week and bring solid club and prep credentials to the fold.
Stanford's 2013 regular season officially kicks off Friday, Aug. 30 when the Cardinal hosts 2012 College Cup participant Maryland at 7 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The weekend continues Sunday , Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. against 2012 national finalist Georgetown on the Pac-12 Networks, the first of eight televised games for the Cardinal this season.
