OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Stanford football free safety Ed Reynolds and strong safety Jordan Richards have been named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. The award is presented to the best defensive back.
The award was established in 1986 after its namesake. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
Reynolds has previously been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list for the nation’s most outstanding defensive player.
Reynolds, a preseason nominee for the Lott IMPACT Award, established himself with a noteworthy junior campaign. The 2012 third team AP All-American led the Cardinal with six interceptions, three of which he returned for a touchdown to set a school record. Reynolds ranked first nationally with 301 interception return yards, one yard short of the NCAA single-season record set in 1974 by USC’s Charles Phillips.
Richards makes his first watch list appearance but has also earned other preseason honors with placement on Phil Steele All-America fourth team and preseason All-Pac-12 teams from Steele and Athlon Sports. The Folsom, Calif. native earned All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Academic honors last year while leading Stanford with 15 passes defended, including three interceptions. He also finished third on the team with 68 tackles.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee and players will be added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12, 2013 on ESPN.
The Jim Thorpe Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Stanford’s season opens Sept. 7 with an 8 p.m. (PT) home game against a San Jose State team that won 11 games a year ago. The game will be televised nationally on Pac-12 Networks.
