STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford RHP Mark Appel was named Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the league.
Appel racked up nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings of a 2-1 victory over UCLA on Friday night to become Stanford's all-time strikeout leader (372). The Houston, Texas, native allowed three hits, issued a pair of walks and conceded one run in his final collegiate start and improved to 10-4 on the season.
Appel set the tone early, needing just 10 pitches to strikeout the side in the opening stanza, and never looked back.
It was the 25th time in the last 29 starts the righty has lasted at least seven frames to move his career total to 377.2 innings pitched, good for fourth in program history. Appel leads the Pac-12 and ranks second in the nation with 130 punchouts, and his is 2.12 ERA ranks fourth in the conference.
This is Appel's third Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod of the season and the fifth of his career. Cardinal pitchers have won the award a league-best 80 times overall.
