Transfer Student-Athletes
Home > Prospective Student-Athletes > Initial Eligibility > Transfer Student-Athletes

Transfer eligibility rules vary according to the current school the individual attends and his or her previous athletic history. Transfer students to Stanford typically fall within three categories: 1) No history of intercollegiate athletics participation, 2) Current Student-Athlete (non-Division I institution), 3) Current Division I Student-Athlete

No history of intercollegiate athletics participation
  • Individuals need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • The Stanford Compliance Services office will need a copy of your transcript from the previous institution to certify your academic eligibility.
Current Student-Athlete (Non-NCAA Division I institution)
  • Individuals need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • Individuals will need to obtain permission from their current institution to speak with the coaches at Stanford.
**Please note, Stanford coaches and administration may not speak with you without written permission from your current school if you are coming from another 4-year institution. After permission is received, the Stanford compliance staff will further evaluate your eligibility. If you are a Junior College transfer you do not need to obtain a written permission
Current Division I Student-Athlete
  • Pac-10 Conference Transfer Rule:  Student-athletes currently attending Pac-10 Conference institutions and involved in intercollegiate athletics will not be permitted to compete or earn financial aid in their first year of attendance upon transferring to Stanford in order to satisfy the NCAA One-Year in Residency Requirement.  Student-athletes transferring to another Pac-10 institution will also use a season of competition while serving their one-year in residence even though they did not compete.  Please see your institutional compliance staff for exceptions to this rule.
  • Football, Basketball, and Baseball Student-Athletes:  Transfer student-athletes competing in football, basketball, and baseball will need to attend Stanford for one academic year before they will be permitted to compete in order to serve the NCAA One-Year Residency Requirement. Additional penalties are imposed on Pac-10 Conference Student-Athletes  PDF Document
  • Non-Football, Basketball, Baseball Student-Athletes:  Student-athletes not competing in football, basketball or baseball will need to obtain permission from their current institution to speak with the coaches at Stanford.
** Please note, Stanford coaches and administration may not speak with you without written permission from your current school.  After permission is received, the Stanford compliance staff will further evaluate your eligibility.

Please note, the general transfer rule requires all student-athletes to not compete their first year at the new institution as they serve the NCAA One-Year Residency Requirement.  There are exceptions to this rule and student-athletes should consult their institutional compliance office to see if they meet one of the exceptions.
