Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford Rugby program has been chosen by USA Rugby to host the 2003 Collegiate Rugby Championships on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
"We could not be more pleased to hold this event," Stanford Associate Athletic Director Ray Purpur said. "The long tradition of rugby at Stanford, and our new clubhouse, stadium and field make this the perfect venue to host this national championship."
Unveiled in a dedication ceremony on Saturday, March 8, the Steuber Rugby Stadium and the Doyle Family Clubhouse form Stanford's newest athletic venue. The 762-seat capacity stadium and adjoining clubhouse combine to form the top collegiate rugby facility in the country. It is also the only rugby field in the U.S. to conform to international standards. The new facilities were made possible by donations of the Steuber and Doyle families and many other generous alumni committed to providing the club sport with a top-notch place to play.
"It's a great pleasure to work with Stanford as host for our Collegiate Rugby Companionships," USA Rugby CEO Doug Arnot said. "Stanford has a strong commitment to the game of rugby. This tournament will be evidence of that energy. USA Rugby is also very excited about the outstanding television coverage of this year's collegiate championships on College Sports Television (CSTV). This coverage will give exposure to the fastest growing club sport among colleges in America, and will showcase Stanford's exceptional athletic facilities and academic institutions."
The event features teams from across the United States. The men's bracket will feature defending national champion California, Air Force, Army and Harvard. The women's bracket includes defending national champion Air Force, Illinois, Penn State and UC San Diego.
