Feb. 20, 2001

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Stanford University's athletic program was ranked No. 1 by The Sporting News in an annual survey of all schools participating in both Division I football and men's basketball.

The paper graded 115 schools in four categories--Did We Win, Did We Graduate, Did We Rock and Did We Play Fair--covering the last 12 months.

Stanford was first in graduation, sixth in fairness, reflecting gender equity, tied for 21st in winning and 44th in Did We Rock, reflecting administrative and fan support. That produced two grades of A, a B-plus and a B-minus for an overall 3.50 on a 4.00 GPA scale.

Michigan State was second, North Carolina third, Notre Dame fourth and Purdue fifth.

Stanford's men's basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press poll.
