Dear Coach,
I am pleased to invite you to the 24th edition of the Stanford University Cross Country Invitational to be held on Saturday, September 27, 1997. This meet should provide you and your team with exciting competition on a fair course. We are happy to report that our 1996 meet attracted over fifty different colleges and universities to the Stanford Golf Course. These schools represented each NCAA Division, and we had a selection of NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges.

Over the past five years our meet has grown steadily in participation. We have reached the maximum field sizes that we can accommodate for each race. As a result, we will cap our fields at 210 athletes per race and will host an open NON-team-scored race at the end of the day to handle any overflow.

We don't anticipate problems with our field sizes for this year, but in order for us to avoid unforeseen problems in this area, please fax the enclosed Intent-To-Compete form to our office at (415) 725-0758 on or by August 15 to confirm your plans to attend this year's meet. We will give priority to those teams who have attend the meet in the past and to those schools which contact us on or by August 15. We believe this policy will enable our office to conduct a safe and quality competition on September 27.

Please feel free to contact our Meet Director, Michael Reilly, at (415) 723-2736 if we can help with your plans. We have made the following arrangements to assist with your travel.

POLICY FOR SELECTING CHAMPIONSHIP INVITATIONAL SECTIONS
The University Championship Invitationals will consist of the top ranked collegiate teams as determined by the respective NCAA Cross Country Coaches polls and the meet management. The University Collegiate Sections will include any college team that does not meet the criteria of the Championship Invitationals. This policy will allow for more even competition and not overload the course. We expect 25 teams in the Collegiate Section and 15 teams in the Championship Invitational for both men and women. However, the meet management reserves the right to control the number of teams selected for the Championship Invitationals based upon the quality and parity of the teams entered in the meet. We will score the races separately as Division I, II, and III in order to satisfy all NCAA regulations. To facilitate this scoring, please indicate your school's division in the appropriate section of the entry form.

Please Remember The Following

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The beautiful Stanford Golf Course is home to the Cardinal men's and women's cross country teams. Both picturesque and challenging, the Stanford Golf Course has played host to an outstanding tradition of top flight cross country competition. Home of the NCAA District-8 Championships for six seasons and the Pac-10 Championships since 1972, the course has challenged some of the finest distance runners in the world. In 1996, Stanford hosted the USAT&F National Cross Country Championships. The meet saw the nation's best harriers compete for national titles and spots on the World Championship team.

The course is mostly grass with some areas of dirt and short stretches of asphalt. Athletes will find the portions of the course on the same side of the tunnel as the starting line (see maps below) to be relatively flat. However, the course beyond the tunnel contains several long hills.

Flags, chalk and a lead bike will mark the course. Please be sure to check your team packet on race day for last minute information on the course.

Your cooperation in preserving the beauty of the Stanford Golf Course is critical. Please instruct your athletes to stay away from the Stanford Barn and Stables and remember to NEVER RUN ON THE GREENS, ACROSS TEES, OR THROUGH SAND TRAPS. For the safety of everyone, NO FRISBEES, FOOTBALLS, PETS, OR BICYCLES will be permitted anywhere on the course. We appreciate your willingness to maintain the Stanford Golf Course.
