Stanford, CA - The Cardinal Women's Lacrosse team (3-2 overall, 3-0 MPLL) takes on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0 overall, 0-0 Big East) at 2pm at Stanford Stadium this Saturday, admission is free. This game will be the fourth in a four-game homestand that started with the 1st Annual East/Weat Challenge on February 23rd.
Stanford lost its first two games at home to a pair of tough East Coast teams, a 15-9 loss to No. 10 Syracuse and a 20-6 loss to Cornell. They came back to topple the St. Mary's Gaels 15-7 on Tuesday to bring their league record to 3-0. That win marked the 14th consecutive league win for Stanford, after going undefeated during the 2001-02 season and bringing home their 4th consecutive WWLL Championship. They also beat the Gaels earlier this season 12-8 at St. Mary's Stadium, a week after a victorious season opener (17-5) over the UC Davis Aggies.
Newcomers On Top
Six of the top 10 scoring leaders over the first five games of the season are freshman, with two sophomores and the two seniors rounding out the list. Freshmen Julia Calzonetti and Kelsey Twist are leading the way with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Calzonetti started the season with four goals in her first collegiate game and has nine goals and four assists. Twist had four goals in the second game of the season, vs. St. Mary's and has eight goals and four assists total.
With 10 points so far this season are freshman Nina Pantano (nine goals, one assist), sophomore Abbi Hills (seven goals, three assists) and freshman Claire Calzonetti (five goals, five assists). Out front for the goalkeepers is another newcomer, junior transfer Virginia Solomon has started all five games and has 36 saves with a save percentage of .51.
